This selection exercise may be used to generate a reserve list of suitable candidates that may be used to address Organization's similar staffing needs in the future.

 

 

POST DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Head of Language Department, the incumbent revises translations into his/her mother tongue of documents drafted in the other official languages of the Organization, dealing with a broad range of subjects, and relating to its day-to-day activities and to the decisions to be taken by its governing bodies. He/she translates, usually without revision, texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the Organization, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ACTIVITIES

 

DUTY 1: Revision and translation

 

  1. Revise translations, into the language of the Department, of texts relating to a wide variety of subjects and varying greatly in terms of quality and style. In that context, ensure that all translations are of high quality in terms of style, grammar, and syntax, and that they faithfully reflect the meaning or intention of the original, in accordance with the spirit and style of the language of the Department, observing in-house usage and terminology.
  2. Translate, usually without revision, texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the Organization, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency, including technical, legal, and financial texts. In that context, provide high quality translations in terms of style, grammar, and syntax, and ensure that that they faithfully reflect the meaning or intention of the original, in accordance with the spirit and style of the language of the Department, observing in-house usage and terminology.
  3. Edit texts drafted in the language of the Department by authors from outside LSE and varying greatly in terms of quality and style to comply with the General Secretariat's usage.
  4. Work under pressure of tight deadlines, reconciling quality and speed. Take part, as required, in revision and translation tasks requiring considerable flexibility as part of a team, particularly in connection with statutory meetings.
  5. Devote time and effort to developing his/her knowledge and improving his/her skills in the fields covered by his/her team. Achieve and maintain full proficiency in the main IT and other tools and resources available in LSE.

 

DUTY 2: Terminology and technology

 

  1. Gather information on the relevant professional, legal, financial, scientific, and other technical areas, consulting specialists, reference works, technical dictionaries, terminology databases and other sources.
  2. Enrich LSE’s terminology and document resources by pooling relevant information gathered and the results of research carried out personally; in particular, create and update records in the terminology database.
  3. Validate records in the terminology database, in consultation with the Department’s Terminology Focal Point and/or the Head of Department.
  4. Answer questions from clients pertaining to terminology for his/her Department.
  5. Participate in the development of new terminology for use where none exists in the target language. Actively contribute to standardizing and harmonizing in-house terminology.
  6. Contribute personally to the good flow of information and ideas within his/her own team and within Language Services as a whole, through effective and respectful communication.
  7. Participate as required in training, visits and international meetings on specialist topics and for translation professionals.
  8. Participate in suggesting the choice of technical tools and in the decision-making process for training. 

 

DUTY 4: Advice and training

  1. Counsel and assist translators and brief them on the procedures and practices of Language Services, terminology and. A broad range of subjects. Act as a mentor for new translators and provide guidance to other units on institutional matters as required.
  2. Provide the Head of Department with an assessment of the work of the Department’s translators.
  3. Advise on translation work performed outside the Organization by freelance translators and revise their work. Counsel and assist them.
  4. Assist members of other Language Departments in understanding texts in the language of the Department.
  5. When the circumstances so require, at the request of the Head of Language Department: (a) organize and coordinate the work of translators and monitor progress of such work in relation to an agreed schedule; and (b) grade tests of candidates for employment, including prospective contractual translators, and assess translators applying to be junior or senior translators or revisers.

                                                                                                                               

DUTY 5: Other tasks

           

  1. Replace the Head of Language Department as required to ensure the smooth daily running of the Department in the absence of the latter.
  2. Perform such other duties as may be required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

Education and qualification required:

  • A university-level degree in translation, or in a relevant discipline complemented by translation and revision capabilities.

 

Experience required:

 

  • A minimum of five years of experience as a translator and reviser in a governmental, non-governmental, or international organization, preferably at INTERPOL or in organizations dealing with similar subject-matter;
  • Solid experience of working with IT applications, in particular CAT tools.

 

LANGUAGES:

 

  • Perfect command French as a mother tongue;
  • Excellent knowledge of two of the Organization's other languages, one of which must be English if this is not the mother tongue.

 

SKILLS required:

 

  • Ability to grasp and deal with a wide variety of subject matters (law, finance, IT, forensics, etc.);
  • Excellent general knowledge given the wide range of areas covered;
